Henry Knox's Trail

A few days ago, I posted about Knox’s arrival outside of Boston. So for Travel Tuesday, let’s look at his trail!


I did my best to capture the locations and where markers can be found.


Start of the Trail – New York

  1. Crown Point, NY – Marker at Crown Point on Lake Champlain.

  2. Fort Ticonderoga, NY – Several markers at Fort Ticonderoga, the expedition’s launch point.

  3. Fort Ticonderoga Portage Road – Nearby historic portage.

  4. Lake George Area (Sabbath Day Point) – Early route along the lake.

  5. Bolton Landing, NY – Marker in Roger’s Memorial Park overlooking Lake George.

  6. Glens Falls, NY – Marker near Crandall Park.

  7. Hudson Falls, NY – Marker at Main Street by the library.

  8. Fort Edward, NY – Marker near the High School / Hudson River area.

  9. Fort Miller, NY – Small marker near NY Route 4.

10.Schuylerville / Stillwater Area, NY – Markers near Saratoga and Stillwater (some missing but historically significant).

  1. Waterford, NY – Marker at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park.

12.Crescent / Latham / Albany, NY – Route markers near Route 9 and the Mohawk River crossings.

  1. Rensselaer, NY – Marker along Route 20 near the state capital region.


Massachusetts Markers (Trail Continues East)

  1. Alford, MA (State Line) – Marker near Route 71 at the NY-MA border.

  2. North Egremont, MA – Marker on Egremont Plain Road.

  3. Great Barrington, MA – Historic trail marker at Route 23 & US-7.

  4. Monterey, MA – Marker on Route 23.

  5. Otis, MA – Route 23 marker.

  6. Blandford, MA – Marker at Route 23 & North Blandford Road.

  7. Russell, MA – Marker at General Knox Road intersection.

  8. Westfield, MA – Marker on Main Street.

  9. West Springfield, MA – Marker on Route 20.

  10. Springfield, MA – Marker on Boston Post Road.

  11. Wilbraham, MA – Route 20 & Main Street.

  12. Palmer, MA – Marker at Wilbraham Street.

  13. Warren & Brookfield, MA – Markers on state routes.

  14. Leicester & Worcester, MA – Markers on Main Street / Lincoln Square.

  15. Shrewsbury, Northborough, Southborough, MA – Series of town markers.

  16. Framingham, MA – Marker along the Post Road corridor.

  17. Wayland, Weston, Waltham & Watertown, MA – Markers heading closer to Boston.

  18. Cambridge Common, MA – Marker noting where Knox delivered the artillery to Washington.

  19. South Boston / Dorchester Heights, MA – Commemorative site marking where the artillery was emplaced to force the British evacuation.
